We both take an active role in the Little League in which our sons play, and we can always be counted on to help out at any of their schools. One organization that I hold close to my heart is Spread the Word: Kids to Kids. This literacy group was founded in 2000 by US Congressman Jon Porter and his wife, Laurie. The goal of this organization is to collect books from other Nevada children and re-distribute them to at-risk children in our valley. Since their inception, I have helped to collect over 30,000 books from my students, and every year we donate a portion of our Book Fair profits to this cause. Lastly, I place great importance on living a healthy lifestyle. At my school, I have helped to turn a dark and dusty store room into a student fitness center that is being held up as a model for other schools in our district. Each week, I provide free weight training to some of our 170+ members, and we have seen great results from this. We also stress proper nutrition, appropriate lifestyle choices, and teamwork.
